Doodling
January 30, 2008 at 4:27 pm (aesthetics, creativity, doodling, drawing, observation, visual arts)

Taking a watercolor that I did a few weeks back, I took out an ink pen and traced around the shapes of color. This was a wonderful way to let my mind go while doodling around shapes to see what would appear.
The result is above. My sons think it looks like a cool planet where they would like to live. I am enjoying the colors and the interesting shapes…also, it reminds me of my thoughts wandering as I doodled. Very reflective….

Navajo Sandpainting Textile
I was listening to Joseph Campbell this morning on the ride to work. He was discussing the Navajo mandalas/sandpaintings.
I found this sand painting/textile (above) at the following site: http://www.canyonart.com/sandrugs.htm
Mandala painting has been my way for a while, to capture a window to my life as it is at the moment of the painting. The sand painting by the Navajo was used in healing rituals. With the support of the shaman, the individual who needed healing would actually be right in the mandala/sandpainting. Putting these thoughts together…I have found the mandala to be a continuous focus of strength and learning for each day…for healing and rebuilding.
What are your thoughts on the mandala? Why do you think there are mandalas found in so many spiritual ceremonies or cultures?
Working with Artists in the Schools

Judy Piazza

I am going to take some time in my posts to honor the artists and the schools that I have worked with over the years in my job at the Ottawa Area ISD. Bringing artists into the schools has been a huge part of my work, but at this time I am re-thinking this focus. While it is very fulfilling, the time involved for me as an individual is demanding and it is time for me to move on.
That said, I would like to have a series over the next few months honoring the artist and the process which brought them to the schools over the past 7 years. I would like to share with others the possibilities of bringing artists in to work with young people and educators.
Judy Piazza was one of the first artists I had the pleasure bringing to the schools. She has been exploring sound since a young age. A percussionist, singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, recording artist, music therapist, and educator, Judy performs, facilitates workshops, and teaches nationally/internationally.
In collaboration with West Michigan Academy of Arts and Academics http://www.wmaaa.com/and Spring Lake Public Schools http://www.spring-lake.k12.mi.us/intermediate/index.html, Judy created drumming workshops for the teachers and students. She also worked with a small group of students from both schools bringing them together for a culminating performance at the end of her residency.
What I learned in the process:
-
Take the time to meet with the artist, teachers, and principals at least 6 months to a year in advance for a residency.
-
Plan the schedule with the artist, go over funding, secure funding sources from the start and create contracts with all parties.
-
Judy brought many instruments in with her. She played them and allowed the students to play them creating wonderous sounds.
-
The students were very fascinated by the didgeridoo from Austrailia.
-
The students were all very excited to play all of the instruments.
-
They also enjoyed the final performance whether performing or as part of the audience (based on final evaluations sent in by the students).
-
During the drumming circle for the teachers, some of them were thrilled to be part of a drum circle, while others did not feel it worked into their lives.
-
During the performance, I saw delight and focus on the faces of the students.
-
The students responded with such enthusiasm to have an artist in their midst, working with them and they raised hopes that it would happen again.
-
The teachers and principals were very willing to support this project through funding and scheduling.
I was able to participate in all of the workshops. The drumming circle with teachers was especially exciting to me. It was a beautiful experience. To have the time to work with peers and create such wonder through drumming has remained a part of my soul.

Getting back to my piano practice…after how many years?

Today I am off to the music store to purchase some Chopin. I have not sat down to the piano in years and yesterday was reminded again of the beauty of classical music as my sons practiced for their lessons.
I remember practicing Chopin when I was young and was always drawn back to his compositions…perhaps because they were haunting? The melodies made sense to me.
So…off to find (hopefully an easy version!) of the works of Chopin. Then, I will begin to practice again each day to bring the joy of the piano back into my everyday life.

William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)
When You Are Old
WHEN you are old and gray and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face among a crowd of stars.
Enjoy the beauty of the words and image.
Sketching at the Gardens

I saw a Fern Tree (the first sketch above). It is like the fiddle fern here where I live, but it is a tree found in Australia. The fronds curl out in a spiral before they open to branches. I love spirals and have begun to look for them in nature. I took a moment to get these spirals on the paper.
I also saw a Lady slipper that had a beautiful shape. It really looks like a lady’s slipper from …oh…looks like 1500s-1700s? I was happy that my sketched shape looked similar.
It was calming to be inside with the quiet and the foliage from other worlds. Next time I will also bring markers or colored pencils to record the colors:)

Saw blueberries in a magazine the other day. I was just flipping through the pages while waiting for water to boil for dinner. Then I remembered there were summer bluberries in the freezer:)
This summer, as usual, my husband and my sons gathered blueberries. Then, my husband laid them out on trays and froze them to enjoy this winter. What a treat!
I also was taught by a wonderful friend how to can peaches…yummmmmm. Not only do they look beautiful in the jars, the savory taste lingers all winter long.
So as the winter buries us in snow and cold, we can be reminded of the summer and the wonderful tastes of the bounty. I do love the winter snow…but having a bit of summer to savor is a touch of wonder for me.
